Denise Taitt – IWD

Occupation: Area Team Leader for Youth & Community Service for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
Event: International Women’s Day 2009
Venue: Vauxhall Studio – London

Denise was born in Trinidad and came over to London as a teenager. Later studied fashion design and accounting. As a single parent working to support the family was necessary so she started volunteering with youth training. Enjoyed it so much, she has dedicated over twenty-five years career in the Youth Service.

I returned from boarding school at the age of 17 years when my family returned back to Gloucestershire. I joined a youth club in Gloucester and Denise was leading a project for Muslim women. I really enjoyed my time spent there and learnt a lot from Denise the other girls in the youth club.

I was keen to help young people in the community and entered a career as a part-time youth and community worker whilst studying for my university degree. Last summer I started my own project www.madmmentors.com a youth mentoring project for young people who want a carer in the creative arts. which helps young people gain a career in creative industries. MAD Mentors, Media, Art, Design.

This older version of Estelle (musician), is a grandmother who puts her community and people first; and someone’s advice I always like to ask for because she is honest and pragmatic. I needed to highlight Denise because of her fun memories of youth club and the good advice she gave me throughout the years.

Denise’s Women’s Day Message:
