Evadney Campbell

Occupation: BBC Video Journalist /MBE
Location:  Mitcham – London
Date: October 2009

This feature of Celebrity Style is to highlight ‘Moguls’ in their field of work.

I wanted to highlight a truly special person who works within the heart of the community and for the community.

Evadney was born in Jamaica and came to settle in Gloucester at the age of 11 years old. This Gloucester girl has had a successful career of 17 years working for BBC Gloucestershire.
Evadney started by hosting a specialist programme for an African/Caribbean radio show very weekend. Which later lead Evadney starting to report specialist programmes for BBC for the entire region of Gloucestershire. Her strong community activity and involvement also inspired Evadney to start the African/Caribbean Association in Gloucester.

In 1999 the company Evadney was working full-time for had a massive a re-structure and redundancies. It was at this time that she made an ambitious decision to change the direction of her life and enrolled to study for her Post Grade in Journalism in Broadcasting from The University of Birmingham.

In 2001 Evadney applied for a position in London working for the BBC and to her amazement was she was offered this job; and since then has worked for BBC – South London as an online radio /video journalist.

Evadney reports real stories are about real people in her community. Bringing our attention to community triumph, raising awareness and highlighting extraordinary achievements.
Evadney has covered subjects such a post dramatic stress order of those who served in the war, and those with HIV. Something close to her heart is helping mothers raise awareness for Gastroschisis. Gastroschsis is when babies who are born with intestines or any organ outside the body. Since reporting this story, mothers support groups have started and therefore helped many mothers and families.

Evadney has set up workshops and summer activities for young people in Mitcham and also is the Chair for SK Youth Group in Mitcham.

At the end of my interview Evadney causally told me she has also been awarded with an MBE for Services in the Community in 1994. She told me, receiving the award was amazing but only as years pass she really appreciates the value of this award.

This amazing and ever so humble woman doesn’t want her MBE to be the focus of her conversation instead the stories of real people in her community. Evadney’s specialty is her connection with her community and the people that live in it. I admire this super soul woman for her as her warmth and kindness.

Thank you Evadney for educating and sharing your knowledge, you are an inspirational role model to us all!
